Koc University, Department of Media and Visual Arts, invites applications for full-time faculty positions of any rank (beginning September 2012). Qualified candidates should have a Ph.D. at the time of employment. Areas of specialization are open, but candidates with applied and/or research experience in film, video, animation, and/or game design are particularly encouraged to apply.

The Department of Media and Visual Arts at Koc University, founded in 2010, offers an interdisciplinary curriculum that emphasizes communications theory, media/arts management, and production. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the department. He or she will be expected to teach two courses per semester and is expected to have an active research, publication and/or art production agenda.

If It Was Not for Terrorism: Crisis, Compromise, and Elite Discourse in the Age of “War on Terror” aims to investigate questions regarding the hegemonic power that is exercised by elites (and mass media) through the discourse of “War on Terror.” The chapters in the volume provide case studies from a wide variety of geographies to debate questions regarding the construction of the meaning of “terrorism,” communication of collective identities and otherness, and media frames regarding the “War on Terror,” civil liberties, and government restrictions. In bringing this collection together, it was the editors’ intention to provide a venue for discussion of expressions and diverse concerns around the themes of media and terrorism from international and interdisciplinary perspectives. The edited volume is divided into two parts. The first part focuses on elite discourse about the definition of “terrorism” and discursive strategies involved in construction of “us” vs. “others.” The second part of the volume investigates issues related to media framing of the compromises that are deemed necessary for success in the “War on Terror.” At the same time, several chapters of this part also identify opportunities for resistance to hegemonic discourse.

Freedom-Not-Fear, Day of Protest

The Freedom-Not-Fear movement, a group of European citizens concerned with growing expansion of surveillance in the post 9/11 era of “war on terror” is taking their protest to the EU capital Brussels on September 17, 2011.

The movement draws attention to how the climate of fear instilled by the vivid imagery of planes crashing into the World Trade Center and the rhetoric of “War on Terror” has contributed to an expansion of authoritarian control at the expense of individual liberties and it is time for a change:

European policy making is affecting our every day lives and civil liberties more and more. The EU is increasingly imposing unnecessary and disproportionate governmental surveillance measures on us. We will not take this any longer. Let’s carry our protest into the capital of the EU!

We invite you to join us for a protest march “Freedom not Fear – Stop the surveillance mania!” in Brussels on Saturday, 17 September 2011.

Hybridity in Contemporary Media Arts

I will discuss heterogenous forms of interplay in the digital that are considered hybrid because they no longer refer to distinct media but to already mediated elements that characterise our present time of digital media. I will also refer to approachs in media studies and in cultural studies where they agree that artists are the promotors of radical and critical hybridity as much as they reflect culural-aesthetic multiplicity and difference and make us aware of the construction of meaning with and through media appearances. Because of the advanced deleopments with novel technologies in Asia, I will put one focus on examples of Japanese media arts that are also circulating within Europe, and will in comparison refer to exampes of critical media arts I from a European perspective that also reflects our highly saturated media enviornments. In this respect questions of connecting real and virtual location and the positioning of cultural context and the effects of effacing borders between fact and fiction are gaining importance. In light of these hybrid fusions, I wish to discuss the role of creative use of new technologies

Professor Yvonne Spielmann (Ph.D. habil.) is Chair of New Media at The University of the West of Scotland, previously Professor of Visual Media at Braunschweig School of Art. She is author of the German language monographs “Eine Pfütze in bezug aufs Mehr. Avantgarde” (1991), “Intermedialität. Das System Peter Greenaway” (1998), and “Video. Das reflexive Medium” (2005). The English edition “Video. The Reflexive Medium” (published with MIT Press, 2008) was awarded the “Lewis Mumford Award for Outstanding Scholarship in the Ecology of Technics” in 2009. The Japanese edition is forthcoming from Sangen-Sha Press, Tokyo, the Polish edition is forthcoming from Oficyna Naukowa, Warszawa.

The most recent book on “Hybrid Culures” (2010) discusses on hybridity in digital media arts with a focus on Japan (English edition forthcoming with MIT Press, 2012).

Farewell to IAMCR 2011

This week, esteemed friends from Kadir Has University, Istanbul successfully hosted a five-day IAMCR conference. I was proud to be a part of it, met some very interesting colleagues, and listened to even more interesting papers presented throughout the conference.

Congratulations to IAMCR, the local organizing committee at Kadir Has University, and Delano for bringing IAMCR to Istanbul.

Hope to see you in South Africa in 2012.

Vote Compass is a free online application that provides users with a sense of how their opinions square with the platforms of the political parties running in the 2011 Turkish election. Based on their responses to a series of statements, Vote Compass calculates a user’s position in the political landscape and shows them the respective positions of the various parties running in the election.

Oy Pusulası siyaset bilimciler tarafından geliştirilmiş ücretsiz bir eğitim aracıdır. Oy Pusulası kullanıcılardan 30 değişik konuda tercih ve değerlendirmelerini öğrenmektedir.
